frugal

Greetings! Welcome to Microfrugality.com. MF (unfortunate acronym, I now realize) was created with one goal in mind – to create a community of personal financiers who are extremely passionate about cutting their expenses. And we want you to be a part of it.

Why focus on expenses? With thousands of sources out there giving personal finance advice, when you break down the world of personal finance there there are really only two strategies for getting ahead financially:

1. Increasing your Income
2. Lowering your Expenses

Increasing your income should not be ignored, but there are a lot of factors that can make this aspect of personal finance out of your control. You could suddenly lose your job, become disabled, lose big in the stock market, or run into one of a number of other unexpected events.

We all have heard the stories about some rich guy who files for bankruptcy, right? Expenses almost always rise with income. You start to think “what’s another $50 when my income is up $5,000 this year”. Sadly, if our expenses rise along with our income, we become increasingly dependent on that income to survive, adding unwelcome stress and mental debt to our lives.

We have much more control over our expenses (no matter what our income is). As long as you are living under your means, you always have an opportunity to get ahead financially. And that’s what we’ll focus on – methods to limit your expenses so that you can build wealth and get further along the path to financial freedom.

MicroFrugality Focus Areas:

As you’ll notice by the category navigation bar at the top of the pages, there will be five expense areas that we’ll focus on:

Bargain & Barter: Whether it’s finding deals online via coupons or sites like Craigslist, we’ll discuss all aspects from finding the deal to negotiating a better deal.

Your Dwelling: We’ll cover all expenses associated with your home, apartment, or other dwelling – saving money on furnishings, utilities, home repair, and more.

Your Environment: Being responsible and treating your planet with respect does not have to mean an increase in expenses. We’ll show you how frugality and environmental stewardship can go hand-in-hand.

Your Finances: This is where we’ll hit on saving money in all of the meat and potatoes of the personal finance world – investing, career, taxes, and retirement.

Your Life: Pets, food, drink, entertainment, clothing, health, travel – all extremely important areas that influence our quality of life. Not surprisingly, many of us struggle to manage our expenses in these areas, and we’ll try to focus on maintaining the same quality of life you want while doing it in a frugal way.

To the Readers. No, to the Frugalheads!

I’d like you to join this new community of ‘Frugalheads’. This is going to be a highly interactive blog and I fully expect that a good number of the tips that come in post form to come from the community. Want to get involved? For starters, either:

I’m really looking forward to following this new blog. I think the most important thing when living frugally is to shift your attitude to get away from money=happiness idea that most people subscribe to, many without even realising.

This is great news! Personal finance sites are a mixed bag of just about anything these days. Glad to see a focus on cutting expenses – all coming from someone who has a fantastic writing style. Looking forward to it!

Awesome. I’m excited to join the other Frugalheads. Also, I like your point about the importance of frugality, no matter your income level. Income levels fluctuate, but our level of frugality is under our control.

Good luck on the new project!

@ Frugal – money buys some security – but it can be misleading.
@ Melinda – Thanks for the complement!
@ Frank Frugal – Hah, I hope the ‘Frugalheads’ thing catches on. Thanks for being one of the first!

I love this site because it always amazes me how easy it is to save money if you just keep your head up and how obvious it is that people are trying to trick you and take your money.

I was clicking around the other night and noticed an advertisement for a FREE TV with purchase at their stores. I expected to see something pretty cheap, and was surprised to see it was a name brand. I have needed a TV for a while now so I decided to look at this further.

The fine print is what killed me though:

Please allow eight weeks delivery for merchandise redeemed online.

You DON’T ACTUALLY GET THE TV. You get a voucher for a TV — that you’ll get in 8 weeks and will at that point be a lot less expensive.

So, as I’m want to do, I came up with two options if you need new glasses and would love a new TV.

    Option 1:
    Pearle Vision

$350 for 1 pair of eyeglasses.
Your “Free” Camera Arrives in February (if you remember to redeem your voucher)
Total: $350 (Start taking pictures in February — in overpriced glasses.)

    Option 2:
Online Retailer, for example http://www.eyeglasses.com (You can use the code UPS1DAY for free 1 day shipping.)

$120 for 1 pair of eyeglasses.
Order your Canon A470 from Amazon for $93 + $10 shipping (it arrives the day after tomorrow)
Total: $143 (Save over $200 and get the TV this week).

Don’t let these marketers trick you. We are too smart for them.
